Why Writing Down Your Business’s Values is a Must!
Oct 15, 2024In today's crowded marketplace, it’s not enough to offer a great product or service—your brand needs a clear identity, built on your core values. Defining and writing down these values is essential for shaping company culture, creating consistent messaging, and driving growth.
At Curated Utah, we experienced this firsthand. Revisiting our values didn’t just lead to a new name—it reshaped our entire business model. The Curated Utah you see today is the result of aligning our mission with the principles that guide us every day. Writing down your brand values isn’t just a recommendation—it’s something we’ve lived through and experienced first hand!
Your brand values are like the roots of a tree—grounding your business and giving it direction. They shape how you operate, interact with clients, and make decisions. Values aren’t just for your website—they’re the invisible framework that guides daily practices and long-term goals.
Shaping Company Culture
Think about your company’s day-to-day. How do you communicate with clients? What kind of environment do you want for your team? Your brand values ensure the way you run your business reflects what truly matters. They also help you hire people who fit not just the job description but also your ethos. When your team embodies the same values, your brand feels more cohesive and authentic.
At Curated Utah, our family-first value shows up in everything—from our marketing to how we balance work and life. It’s not just a buzzword; it’s how we live and work.
Driving Consistent Messaging
Once defined, your values drive consistency in your messaging. Whether writing a social media post, blog, or replying to a customer, your brand’s voice should reflect its core values. This creates not just a recognizable brand, but a memorable one.
When every piece of content reflects what your brand stands for, your audience connects with more than just your product—they connect with your mission. A simple trick? Write a tagline for each value to guide your content.
Fueling Business Growth
Clear values attract the right customers—those who believe in what you stand for. This emotional connection is powerful. Think of brands like Patagonia. Their commitment to environmental sustainability has earned them a loyal customer base, not just for their products, but for their mission. When people believe in your brand, they don’t just buy—they become advocates.
How to Define Your Brand Values
If you're starting from scratch or revisiting your values, defining them is simpler than it seems. It’s all about tapping into the heart of why your business exists.
- Start with Your Why
Reflect on why you started your business. What’s your purpose? This is where your brand’s heart lies. - Ask Your Team (or Clients)
Gather input from your employees or clients. Sometimes, an outside perspective can help clarify values you already embody but haven’t defined. - Identify Core Themes
Look for common threads in your ideas—these are your value pillars. - Narrow it Down
Fewer values are more impactful. Three to five is ideal. - Put Them into Action
Your values should guide everything from marketing to customer service. At Curated Utah, our values of authenticity and community engagement drive how we plan events, engage clients, and create content.
How Your Brand Values Shape Your Content Wheel
Once you’ve defined your brand values, they become the fuel for your content strategy. This is where my Content Wheel framework comes in—a system I’ve used for over five years to keep my content flowing without ever running dry.
At the core of the Content Wheel is your business which is surrounded by your brand values. These values can act as the foundation for every piece of content, keeping your messaging consistent and aligned.
So to do this, start by creating content categories based on your values. Each value can inspire unique content. This helps you Keep it Consistent when it comes to your messaging. As you continue to create content, your values act as a guide, ensuring every piece resonates with your audience and keeps your brand consistent.
